Eudaemonists Mailing List

Welcome to the Eudaemonists
Mailing list Introduction

Why I started the Eudaemonists mailing list - I used to run a mailing list for a while, my MFD-List, and I miss the stimulation and group intellectual discussions. For the last few years I have been a member of the Extropy list, which has been generally positive and very enlightening. However, recently intellectual and productive conversations have virtually disappeared from extropy, providing a good catalyst for the formation of my list. I generally feel now that extropy is a bunch of snobby self congratulatory intellectual elitists, but my opinion is malleable. In general it seems to be completely and totally unproductive, which is sad, considering the number of intelligent people (I thought) on that list. I am hesitant to label my list as anything specific, I want a general list, of intelligent people, who are generally working toward some productive goals, which is way I think this name may be a good fit. I hope you all will be interested in partaking.

I am hesitant to describe much about the list, on the extropy list, it seemed expressing any anti-communist ideas or ideas that could be perceived as pro US was politically incorrect. I strive for no such type of atmosphere about this list. Okay, not okay... the only thing I really mean is that I did not invite the annoying whiners from the extropy list (for example, people who post more complaining about other posts than anything else). Hopefully we will draw people who are interested in contributing somewhat to some goals. But I really do not know what path it would take, as I merely want at least a list of intelligent people to converse with.

Other lists seem to have an atmosphere of laziness and the general hostility presented to people who suggest trying to accomplish things. I find unproductive unmotivated people lash out often at hard workers who try to accomplish things, its some twisted defense mechanism for them not having to take responsibility for their inaction. In addition the incessant whining about flaming and personal attacks prevalent on these lists has further encouraged me to start my own.

I envision this list focusing on Eudaemonists themes, but since the primary theme of Eudaemonia is self-fulfillment and enjoying life, topics will be broad and diverse. I hope this list will be used to help each other out as much as we can, and generally create a supportive pro-technology extropic atmosphere. I envision such a list to be rife with technical and political questions, observations ideas, etc. I hope you all find it enjoyable and stimulating.

Eudaemonists Mailing list Rules

There will be no moderation and no active policing of the mailing list for the time being. If in the future it should become blatently apparent that one of these is needed then a more formal structure will be put in place. For now refrain from obvious ad hominems (as technically vague as an ad hominem is) and please do not send any attatcments.

Note on Posting

The start of this list was delayed beyond my preference, my only hangup was that with the current list software built into my web hosting service is that you have to hit 'Reply to all' to get the message to go back to the list, the default 'reply' will only send the message to the sender. I know that can be changed, but I am still working on figuring out how, until then, remember to hit 'Reply to all' (and to delete the original sender in the 'To' field, unless you want a message going to the list and to the Sender)

All that being said, I want to welcome everyone to my new list, which I have called 'Eudaemonists' After Aristotle's concept of total human well being through the pursuit of rational humanistic endeavors. The capacity to reason is the single largest differentiator between humans and other beings on this Earth, and as such it is the most uniquely human. To embrace humanity, one must embrace the uniqueness that we hold, one must embrace reason and all the things that make living worthwhile. To me, to embrace reason, nature, beauty, and passion is to be a Eudaemonist. Welcome...
